from Kamal Abdel-Malek, the founder of
Arabic and World Literature: Comparative and Multidisciplinary Perspectives (AWL)
It is my great pleasure and honor to welcome all of you to the Electronic Journal of Arabic and World Literature: Comparative and Multidisciplinary Perspectives. On behalf of the Chief Editor and Editorial Board I would like to greet the constituencies out there, I mean the authors and readers who are interested in the Arabic literary tradition as it relates to, and interacts with, Western and other literary canons worldwide.
For a long time, critical writings on Arabic literature, whether in the form of books or journal articles, revolved around some set internal issues pertaining to compositional structures and rhetorical devices but devoid of awareness, let alone clear grasp, of Western critical theories and hermeneutics. Only in recent years did we start to read critical works in Arabic that demonstrate masterful familiarity with Western theories, and, at times critiques of these theories and a call to include the experiences and practices of minority literature, like the Arabic literary tradition, in the wider discussions on the meaning and direction of literature worldwide.
AWL offers an opportunity for scholars to engage in serious research and share their findings and musings with a wider circle of readers interested in Arabic and World Literature. If I have to choose a keyword to describe the concept behind this journal, it is “nexus” as the journal offers a forum in both English and Arabic for researchers to investigate the nexus between Arabic national literatures, global literary theories, and current trends in World Literature. The stress here falls on the “nexus” between Arabic literature and its global sisters, the intersections across these literary traditions, and the inter-associations engendered in the process of researching, writing about, and appreciating these traditions.
I invite researchers to redefine and reappraise what constitutes the Arabic literary tradition. A bolder more muscular approach is needed here; a more integrated definition which takes into account all aspects of the Arabic literature: the classical and the modern, the standard and the vernacular, the canonical and the non-canonical genres. It is also important to bring to the fore the Arabic-language literature of the several minorities residing in the Arab world—Jews, Christians, Kurds, Bedouins, and others.
When in 1988 the Nobel Prize for Literature was conferred on the Egyptian novelist, Naguib Mahfouz, Arabic literature appeared to have been inducted as a member of the worldwide sisterhood of World Literature. A late comer, one may say, for since Goethe's coinage of the term "Weltliteratur" in 1827, it took Arabic literature over a century and a half to enter the literary hall of fame. To make up for the lost time, I invite Arab and international scholars and critics to publish with us at AWL critical articles suggesting theoretical connections between Western approaches to literature and Arab aesthetic tradition.
Literature, evocative, high-powered, genuine literature, composed by competent writers sensitive to nuance, can be a guiding force in a given society and culture. We often think of literature, particularly in the academy, as a reflection, a mirror that projects back what a society or a culture looks like. Literature may show the norms and tacit yet grand assumptions of society but it can also play a role in shaking the props and rearranging the mental furniture in the culture. Can we imagine the French Revolution without the great ideas of the French philosophes and writers like Rousseau, Voltaire, and Montesquieu-- ideas like the rule of the people by the people, of equality, and brotherhood, of people being equal citizens in a republic, and not helpless subjects of a supreme monarch?
Likewise the Arab Spring would not have occurred without the ideas and struggles of enlightened writers and poets who have protested against autocracy, inequality, and absence of democratic rights and freedoms. I must mention here the role of poetry in galvanizing people against the unjust regimes.
It is our unabashed ambition to have AWL blaze trail in exploring the relationship between the Arabic literary tradition and its global sisters, providing a better understanding of the role of literature as both a reflector and shaper of human culture and human destiny.

مجلة الأدب العربي والعالمي: مقاربات ووجهات نظر (AWL)
إنه لشرف كبير لي أن أرحب بكم جميعًا في المجلة الإلكترونية للأدب العربي والعالمي: مقاربات ووجهات نظر. نيابة عن رئيس التحرير وأعضاء هيئة التحرير، أود أن أحيي المؤلفين والقراء المهتمين بالتقاليد الأدبية العربية و صلتها بالآداب الغربية والعالمية.
لفترة طويلة، كانت الكتابات النقدية عن الأدب العربي ، سواء في شكل كتب أو مقالات ، تدور حول بعض القضايا الداخلية المتعلقة بالهياكل السردية والبلاغة ، ولكنها كانت تكاد تخلو من الوعي بالنظريات والتأويلات الغربية الناقدة. في السنوات الأخيرة فقط ، نشرت بعض من الأعمال الناقدة باللغة العربية التي تُظهر الإلمام الجيد بالنظريات الغربية ، وفي بعض الأحيان تنتقد هذه النظريات وتدعو إلى إدراج تجارب وممارسات أدب الأقليات ، مثل الأدب العربي ، في مناقشات أوسع حول دور الأدب في جميع أنحاء العالم.
تقدم AWL فرصة للباحثين للانخراط في بحث جاد وتبادل نتائجهم وتأملاتهم مع دائرة أوسع من القراء المهتمين بالأدب العربي والعالمي. إذا كان لا بد لي من اختيار كلمة مفتاحية لوصف المفهوم الكامن وراء هذه المجلة ، فهي كلمة "علاقة" حيث تقدم المجلة مساحة باللغتين الإنجليزية والعربية للباحثين لاستكشاف العلاقة بين الأدب العربي والنظريات الأدبية العالمية والاتجاهات الحالية في الأدب العالمي. يقع التركيز هنا على "العلاقة" بين الأدبيات العربية وأخواتها العالمية ، والتقاطعات عبر هذه التقاليد الأدبية، والتجليات التي يمكن ان تتولد في عملية البحث والكتابة والاستقبال.
أدعو الباحثين إلى إعادة تعريف وإعادة تقييم ما يشكل الأدب العربي. هناك حاجة إلى نهج أكثر جرأة و تعريف أكثر تكاملا يأخذ في الاعتبار جميع جوانب الأدب العربي: الكلاسيكية والحديثة ،الفصيحة والعامية، وماتكتبه الخاصة وما تجود به قرائح العامة. من المهم أيضًا إبراز الأدب المكتوب باللغة العربية لمبدعين ومبدعات من الأقليات المقيمة في العالم العربي - اليهود والمسيحيين والأكراد والبدو وغيرهم.
في عام 1988 عندما مُنحت جائزة نوبل للآداب للروائي المصري نجيب محفوظ ، بدا أن الأدب العربي قد تم الاعتراف به عضوا فاعلا في رابطة الأدب العالمي. ربما يقول البعض جاء الاعتراف متأخرا، فمنذ أن صاغ غوته مصطلح "Weltliteratur" في عام 1827، استغرق الأمر الأدب العربي اكثر من قرن ونصف قرن للدخول في عضوية الآداب العالمية. ولهذا السبب وللتعويض عن الوقت الضائع ، أدعو الباحثين والنقاد العرب والدوليين إلى نشر مقالات نقدية في مجلة AWL تربط بين الأساليب الغربية في تحليل الأدب والتقاليد الجمالية العربية.
يمكن أن يكون الأدب الصادق قوة إرشادية في مجتمع معين وثقافة معينة. غالبًا ما نفكر في الأدب ، لا سيما في الاوساط الأكاديمية، كمرآة تعكس كيف يبدو المجتمع أو الثقافة. قد يُظهر الأدب المعايير والافتراضات الضمنية للمجتمع ، لكنه يمكن أن يلعب أيضًا دورًا هامّا في هز الدعائم وإعادة ترتيب الأثاث العقلي في الثقافة. هل يمكن أن نتخيل الثورة الفرنسية بدون الأفكار العظيمة للفلاسفة والكتاب الفرنسيين مثل روسو وفولتير ومونتسكيو-- أفكار مثل حكم الشعب للشعب ، والمساواة ، والأخوة ، من كون الناس مواطنين متساويين في جمهورية ، وليسوا رعايا لملك مستبد؟
وبالمثل ، لم يكن من الممكن تصور الربيع العربي من دون أفكار وكفاح الكتاب والشعراء المستنيرين الذين احتجوا على الاستبداد وعدم المساواة وغياب الحقوق والحريات الديمقراطية. يجب أن أذكر هنا دور الشعر في حشد الناس ضد الأنظمة الظالمة.
طموحنا الذي نسعى الى تحقيقه بلا هوادة هو ان نجعل AWL نجمة ساطعة في محاولات استكشاف العلاقة بين التقاليد الأدبية العربية وأخواتها في العالم ، مما يوفر فهمًا أفضل لدور الأدب لا كمرآة عاكسة لمجتمعه ولكن كقوة فاعلة ومشكّلة للثقافة الإنسانية والمصير الإنساني.
